“If a composer could say what he had to say in words, he would not bother trying to say it in music.”
~ Gustav Mahler

I don’t know who Gustav Mahler is (though I suppose I could google him) but I think he’s onto something. Don’t get me wrong, I love words, but for me, music is a form of expression that far transcends the lyrics on the page.

Maybe that’s why I love musicals so much. By combining words with music, they take every possible situation that life may throw at you (as well as a good many situations that are highly unlikely ever to come your way) and are able to give them a meaning unlike anything you could ever describe using only words or only music. You may feel very strongly about something, but music allows you to express your feelings to someone else in a way that they might actually understand, even if they’ve never been in your situation.

So that’s what this blog is going to be about – my love of music. It won’t always be about musicals, though I’ll tell you right now, there will be a lot of musical references throughout. Mostly I’m going to focus on different songs that have been running through my head. I’m also hoping to start a section where I talk about new music or shows that I have “discovered” and give you my own self-proclaimed “professional” opinion about it. We’ll see how it goes! For now, I’m just excited to be here.
